Includes 10 species of native/naturalized wildflowers that tend to be short-lived but a bit rambunctious in reseeding or spreading by roots selected to provide constant and overlapping flowering for our valued pollinators plus 1 naturalized grass species for nesting all in a shade-part shade, dry-moist "cottage garden". For me a "cottage garden" is one where the gardener allows the plants to find their own niches with some gentle editing in spring to eliminate any rogue reseeding or spreading.
Species to include:
(No substitutions requests please, though substitutions may be necessary if poor germination.)
Early Flowering: Prunella vulgaris ssp. lanceolata (Lance Self Heal), Aquilegia canadensis (Columbine), Penstemon digitalis (Smooth White Beartongue).
Mid-Season Flowering: Eurybia macrophylla (Big Leaf Aster) to be substituted with Campanula rotundifolia (Bluebell Bellflower), Aruncus dioicus (Goat's Beard), Eutrochium purpureum (Sweet Joe-Pye Weed), Eupatorium perfoliatum (Boneset).
Late Flowering: Chelone glabra (White Turtlehead) to be substituted with Tradescantia ohiensis (Ohio Spiderwort) which is early flowering, but the only shade option we have left..., due to poor germination, Solidago caesia (Blue-Stem Goldenrod), Symphyotrichum cordifolium (Common Blue Wood Aster).
Native Grass: Deschampsia cespitosa (Tufted Hair Grass)
